About Our Lake

Serpent Lake – Crosby – Deerwood, Minnesota

Located in Crow Wing County, about 125 miles north of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Serpent Lake is a beautiful body of clear, fresh water covering 1,057 acres. Around its more than nine miles of shoreline, amid birch, pine, oak and other towering trees, more than 250 homes and cabins hug its meandering shoreline.

The lake is home to Walleye, Northern Pike, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappies and other fish, which attract anglers year-round, including the winter ice-fishing season.

The lake is located between the cities of Crosby, on its western end, and Deerwood, on the east. Crosby, with a population of 2,311, was founded 100 years ago as a new mining town on Minnesota’s Cuyuna Iron Range. It is home to a major regional medical center and many small businesses and Main Street shops.

Deerwood has a population of about 600 persons and lies on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad (originally the Northern Pacific, which laid the tracks across this region of Minnesota in the 1870s).

The economic life of the area is strongly tied to the lure of Serpent Lake to tourists and its many recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, swimming, snowmobiling and much more. Keeping Serpent Lake clean, healthy and environmentally stable–the mission of the Serpent Lake Association–is vital to the economic future and potential of these communities on its shores.
